Horse Sales

I searched far and wide and talked to a lot of people before deciding on a couple of horses from Hashknife Tennessee Walkers.  I wanted horses that my young children could ride.  They would have to be gentle and patient.  I also wanted horses that my children could grow into.  In other words, they would have to be young and athletic, calm but not without spirit, tough but sweet, willing to run but content to walk and be well trained, obedient and easy to handle.  So all I wanted was the perfect horse.
We could not be happier with our two geldings, Apache age 3, and Kiowa age 2.  After having them for a few months I can see that as beginners with young children, it would have been foolish, if not down right dangerous, to have purchased any other horses.  While we try to discourage unsafe behavior around the horses, every day we see these fine animals standing still while surrounded by the chaos three little kids can create.  I have seen my 5 year old son run under Kiowa with the dog chasing him and get little more than a look from the horse.  I have seen my 3 year old daughter run up to Apache and hug his leg.  He just nuzzled the top of her head.  I watched with amazement as Kiowa braced himself to allow my seven year old son James to climb aboard using anything he could reach including Ki's mane.  Every day, I am amazed at how sweet and tolerant they are.
As beginners, riding can sometimes be challenging.  With these horses however, we are never afraid for our safety.  When the element of fear is removed, learning thrives and confidence builds.  James has gone from barely able to ride in a 30 foot circle to loping around our 20 acres.  My wife, who had never been on a horse before, has no problem on the local trails.  On the trail we have encountered deer, cows, motorcycles and dogs.  On one narrow trail a dog came out of nowhere barking aggressively.  Both horses calmly stared it down.  They load and unload without incident even in the dark without a light of any kind (we found that out when we were out later than expected with no lights in the trailer and no flashlight).  These horses are safe and sane to handle and ride.  They are respectful of even the smallest child.  They are sweet and gentle and of course they are smooth.
Dealing with and getting to know Brandon, Lisa and their boys has been a pleasure.  From the beginning it was clear that they are honest and sincere.  They are far more interested in our success as horse owners than in selling a horse.  From the many emails full of questions to the weekends at their place, it could not have been a better experience.  On a wind blown thirty something degree weekend, Brandon gave me a crash course in horses, horsemanship, riding, feeding, shoeing, training, saddles, you name it.  We worked hard and had a great time.  I went away feeling confident that we were going to be successful horse owners.  We are well on our way now and we owe it to Brandon and Lisa.  (number available upon request).

We had the pleasure of meeting Brandon and his family.  We were interested in Tennessee Walkers and found Brandon by fate on a trip to Billings.  His father Tex, and Brandon spent two days familiarizing us with the wonderful attributes of Hashknife and Hayhook Tennessee Walkers.  After we decided to buy our TW mare Penny, Brandon worked with all of us for a day and one-half in a round pen and arena making sure we were comfortable with our new horse.  He even went into town to help us purchase the correct tack.  His help was very much appreciated.  The entire Carpenter family made us all feel welcome.
Penny is a beautiful 3 year old mare.  She has been a gentle, reliable horse.  Soon after our purchase, we took her on a trail ride in the Big Horns.  When we came across some downed timber, Penny's feet became entangled.  She calmly waited until someone came to assist.  Keven took her several months later elk hunting.  She remained calm when Keven shot an elk and helped haul the elk out without hesitation.  She remains a calm, loving reliable horse that can be trusted in problematic situations.  All of the dealings with the Carpenter family have been wonderful.  They make us feel like family.  It is without hesitation, that I would recommend any horse raised by the Carpenters and trained by Tex or Brandon.  If you would like to confirm this reference feel free to call.  (number available upon request).

We'd just like to thank Brandon for all the hard work he put into the horse we bought named Bailey.  He's such a sweetheart.  Easy to catch, easy to work with, easy to ride, and very calm.  Whenever we get a chance to ride him, which isn't very often, it's like he was just rode yesterday.  In other words he's a great horse and again we say thanks.

I purchased two horses from Brandon Carpenter in the fall of 2003.  I had visited Brandon during the summer of 2002 on the advice of a friend.  Hoping to buy a horse at that point in time, they had already been spoken for.  I did get to take several rides with Brandon on his newly trained horses and was impressed with his training and training philosophy.  I arranged to purchase two horses the following summer.
I am an orthopedic surgeon and in our region cars, motorcycles and horses are involved in serious injuries and deaths each year.  I have owned two gaited horses for over eight years and there is nothing I enjoy more than riding mountain trails or the country.  The horses I had were getting older and the one I rode would spook for no apparent reason and occasionally unload me.  I was unable to change this behavior.  I had been looking for new horses -- the ones available were young and untrained or older horses with some kind of problem.  Safety is a concern of mine and I am not a horse trainer so I contacted Brandon at Hashknife Tennessee Walkers.  Brandon picked out two horses for me based on knowledge of my experience and riding ability as well as my son's and wife's ability.  Brandon looks for temperament and conformation in the horses he raises or buys.  He likes to do all the training -- roundpen focused -- so there are no bad habits to undo.  He also shows the purchaser how to work the horse in the roundpen so the owner can have a proper relationship with the horse.  Because I live close to Brandon, I got to see him take their first ride, see them get sacked out, roped from, feet roped, and untangle themselves from rope wrapped around them.  Brandon works on lifting their feet, dropping off the back of them after sliding out of the saddle and crawling underneath them.  He exposes them to everything he can think of.
When I took possession of my horses in October 2003, they had 20 to 30 rides on them.  Brandon has been willing to talk to me on the phone and even go to where I keep the horses to work with me on problems that have come up.
I have also attended one of Brandon's Roundpen Clinics.  I have come to the realization that horses are very sensitive to the environment around them.  Each time a human interacts with a horse, a training session is going on.  The horse is either training the human or the human is training the horse.  One has to provide consistent leadership which is a skill to be learned.  Brandon's horses have a good foundation.  I had my horses at the veterinarian's office which happens to be 100 feet from the railroad tracks.  The horses were tied to the trailer when a train came by.  Neither horse had seen a train before and one of the horses broke his halter.  He started to run down the driveway.  I ran around the pickup and told him to "face" (verbal cue plus the visual cue of patting the thighs) like we had done in the round corral or to catch him in the pasture.  He came over to me and let me put my arms over his neck and catch him while the train rumbled by.  That saved the horse from a dangerous run away.  Brandon's horses are trained to verbal, visual an physical cues.
My experience with Hashknife Tennessee Walkers has been a positive one.  I have two great horses and I have learned a lot about myself and horse behavior.

I've waited my whole life for a horse like Hatha.  I want to thank you for the fine horse that I purchased from you in 2003.  I am very lucky to have met you and your family.  As a horse trainer, your grounded energy reflects in my horse.  She loaded well, traveled well and really enjoyed working cows last fall.  Me being a novice rider, I didn't stop and re-check my cinch when the saddle slid off with me on it.  She just stopped, stood there and turned her head and looked at me.  What a horse!  She also did well on mountain trails.  The training this horse has had was reflected this spring when I got on her for the first time.  It was as if we'd never missed a beat from last fall.  She responds to all of the leg cues, side passes, as well as neck reins beautifully.  Before I purchased her, Brandon had me spend time with the horse to make sure our personalities were compatible.   I highly recommend the Hashknife Tennessee Walkers or any horse trained by Brandon.   Once I rode a Tennessee Walker, that was it.  I'm hooked.  I am so impressed with my horse and the training she's had, we are purchasing another Walker from the Carpenter's.

When I bought horses from Brandon he said, "you can find a cheaper horse, but you won't find a safer horse."  That statement has proven itself true on many occasions....one time a friend was getting a little sleepy riding Piper in the Beartooth mountains.  Piper jumped a little stream and my friend fell off.  My friend was wearing hiking boots and both feet were hung up in the stirrups.  Instead of spooking and running, Piper just stopped and waited for me to come and help my friend down.  Another time another friend was riding Piper down a really steep, slick section of trail in Tom Miner Basin (north of Yellowstone National Park).  Piper stopped and just stood still though my friend was encouraging him to go, just then the saddle slipped forward, my friend dumped off forward, and Piper just stood there looking down at him while wearing the saddle up around his neck.  He calmly waited while I came over to help my friend up and adjust the saddle so I could lead him down to a flatter spot.  Once while riding Trapper above Horseman's Flats, he suddenly stopped and took a step backwards.  I asked him to whoa.  He did, and just stood his ground while I watched a bear cub cross the trail less than 10 yards in front of us.  We waited a few minutes after it had passed and then continued on our way.
These and several other potentially dangerous instances have convinced me of the value of these "bomb proof" horses.  Brandon asks rhetorically, "what's a broken arm worth?"  As an orthopedist I see a lot of  "horse wrecks" in the emergency room and know well the cost of a rank horse.
Curt S.  Montana

bulletCurt purchased a 2 year old filly and a 3 year old gelding from Hashknife Tennessee Walkers, and a 4 year old gelding from Hayhook Tennessee Walkers.

We want to tell you how well "Loner" our Tennessee Walker performs.  We live on a ranch off Wildcat Creek in Wyoming.  It is rough country with lots of miles to cover.  Loner does this with no problem.  He is a three year old and very quiet. Nothing upsets him and he is very loving.  As I get older I really appreciate how smooth a Tennessee Walker is.  Brandon Carpenters' excellent training resulted in a horse we can use for anything at the ranch.  Thanks from the H hanging T Ranch.

I purchased a Tennessee Walker from Brandon.  Her name is Pepper.  To be honest, she has been a hand full for me only because I am fairly new to horses.  I consider myself an intermediate rider and by no means an expert.  With Brandon's help, I have been able to accomplish many things with Pepper.  She likes to work cows.  I can even rope off her (she is very patient with my beginning skills).  I have ridden her in a few shows, taken her on trail rides, and this year she gave birth to a colt.  I think I have learned more from Pepper and Brandon that Pepper  has from me.
Safety is of prime concern to me as I don't want to end up on the ground from the top of a horse at any time.  Brandon incorporates safety proofing in his training using different techniques.  One lesson is to teach the horse not to come unglued when tangled in a rope.  Let me tell you why this particular lesson appeals to me....  Two years ago I was in a beginning roping clinic.  I had just graduated from a breakaway honda to a regular honda and had roped my first cow.  In a split second things went from good to bad to down right scary.  The cow ran around Pepper and entangled us in the rope.  The rope somehow got stuck under the skirts of my saddle and over the top of my boot making bailing off impossible.  Many times Pepper had the opportunity to panic, but she didn't.  She stood still until help came to us.  Thank you Brandon!  The only bad thing that happened was I had to change my wranglers!  I was definitely more terrified than Pepper.
Brandon has been very helpful to me through phone calls, lessons, and clinics.
I would never not own a Tennessee Walker.  I know Brandon will always be there to answer my questions.  Thank you Brandon!

Since our purchase of "Black Jack", a  3-year-old Tennessee Walker, from Brandon Carpenter a year ago, we have been impressed with the attention that came along with the purchase.
Brandon has spent many hours with us at his place and ours after the sale helping us work with this young, but very well trained horse.  Brandon has always been available when we had questions or concerns.  If we were ever in the market for another horse, we would not hesitate to call Brandon.

Hi Brandon,                                                                                                                                                 I want to let you know how much fun Karen and I are having with Image and Crystal.  We are riding every day and advancing with the skills that you set us up with.  The way you have trained Image for safety on trails, bred him with gentle manners and good looks, combining this with his beautiful gait, makes riding a wonderful experience every time and something to look forward to.
Coming in as an absolute  beginner to being able to do all this is directly accredited to your patience, expertise, and skill, in giving us hands on training from the round pen to talking with us around the campfire on the trail.
On the trail there have been several times where Karen and I have been in situations we did not intend to get ourselves into.  These two year old horses step up to the challenge like veteran trail horses every time.  On one occasion we had to get around a blow down, as I was on the side hill going around the tree, I found myself standing with Image on very loose gravel (more like shale).  As Image went down,  both of his rear legs slid under small logs and the front legs were in the brush trapping him on the ground with me still on top of him.  I talked calmly to him as I stepped off to the high side; he just lay there not moving a muscle.  I patted his neck reassuring him that all was ok, then I made my way carefully to his feet helping him untangle.  He patiently waited for my gentle cue, as if we have been thinking on the same wavelength for years.  On cue, he got right up, as he stood there quivering a little, I game him many "good boys", petting his neck, mounted, and continued up the trail.  Image did fine, but inside I was in need of a little nerve repair myself just thinking of what could have happened.  With your foresight and trail-training experience we have been so grateful to have purchased from you, taught by you, but most of all we value your friendship, and continued support.
I could go on and on telling of how well Image performs in the mountains and how well you have covered our safety concerns, but I want to say a few words about Image himself.  First of all, the gentle way in which you trained him shows through all the time.  I can tell that he has never been abused or mistreated which I really appreciate.  Secondly, the eagerness that he expresses to please, makes me as a beginner able to continue training him and advance in my horsemanship skills in a way I never imagined possible.  Both Image and Crystal have bonded with us and have become a real part of our family.  Thanks to you and the horses, we have been able to get back into the mountains again.
This fall we thought a few riding lessons here locally with a qualified trainer would be a good idea to make sure we don't fall into any bad habits.  On the first lesson our teacher watched as we were riding around her arena with loose reins and a gentle touch with our hands and legs.  After observing us for a while the first thing she said was that I should enter Image in shows because he is such a beautiful horse, responds so well with loose reins, and glides around the arena in such a smooth "running walk".  Other riders we meet on the trails also comment on the horses and admire them in much the same way.   From  being an absolute beginner this spring, to being told by a third party expert that I should "show my horse" has made my day.  This is a direct tribute to you and the honesty of your family business.
We are looking forward to another weekend in the mountains this next summer with your family, your clients, and your alumni who we have also come to enjoy.

Clinics

It was an exceptional clinic.  Brandon's biggest strength was explaining the reasons for doing things.
Laurie M.  Epping, ND.

Brandon has the ability to see what you are doing and have you change one small thing that makes the difference for the horse "getting it."  He was really good about answering questions in detail and explaining further if someone still didn't understand.
Diane T.  Billings, MT.

I'm not much for words, but I really enjoyed Brandon.  He has a gentle, loving gift to teach people and horses.  Keep up the good work.
Ronald S.  Stirum ND.

I am not really sure what Brandon could have covered further, the information was great.  He seemed confident in all his training ethics.
Austin J.  Ambrose, ND.

Brandon takes time with everyone.  I enjoyed what was taught and how it was taught.  He explains what and why  you do things.
Mark P.  Bainville, MT.

I enjoyed the clinic very much -  I learned a lot about the structure of the Walker body and why they gait the way they do.
Rene'e G. Williston, ND.

Brandon's greatest strength as a clinician is talking at my level of understanding.  I was a watcher, but felt very included.
Kristina T. Victor, MT.

Brandon gave me very specific feedback with tools for improving my riding and training of my horse.  He is direct and honest with a sense of humor.  He knows his stuff.
Ginny F. Missoula, MT.

This clinic far exceeded my expectations.  Brandon teaches a wide variety of basic skills that everyone thinks they know how to do, but really don't.  The most important lessons I learned at this clinic are too many to mention.
Sheryl A. Lolo MT.

I was able for the first time to feel what a gaited horse does!  Brandon's strength is his humor and giving time to each individual and not hurrying anyone.  My lesson learned was posture-balance and how it affects what my horse will do.
Lindsey H.  Milton-Freewater, OR.

This clinic helped me with general horsemanship techniques and gaiting knowledge.
Brandon is a good communicator!
Ed  G.  Florence, MT.

Brandon's skill with horses was so helpful to me.  His comments were logical, well thought out.  Obviously highly experienced horse person!!  His greatest strength as a clinician is people awareness with sensitivity.  He helped each individually, but in ways we all benefited.  He added humor often - appreciated that.
Nancy B.  Missoula MT.

Brandon focuses on each individual, he is personable and friendly, has great skills and knowledge and has tremendous energy.  An important lesson I learned was about horse body language from the round pen work.
Suzanne M.  Lolo, MT.

I did not have any expectations (for this clinic), only anxiety.  I've had a bad experience with the "cowboy" type instructor and I was very nervous with Brandon.  Thank you for being kind with your instruction.  He uses humor and is excellent at explaining techniques.
Jeri  S. Polson, MT.

I was impressed with his taking time for every single horse and rider.  His ability to pick the subtle things that make a big difference.  He is good at "reading" horses and their riders.
Darlene  B.  Polson, MT.

I enjoyed the individual attention when required and his direct answers to questions.  I was helped specifically by teaching me to stay out of my horses face, to relax my seat and hands.  I was able to achieve the goal that I had for the horse I brought.  I was able to learn new ways to work with my horse.  Having never used a round pen, I have seen first hand (finally) how beneficial they can be.
Carol H.  Moore, MT.

I was given the encouragement to keep trying.  Brandon relates to people on a level they can understand.
Linda B.  Livingston, MT.

Brandon's horsemanship clinic taught me about a soft responsive mouth, light touch, use of rein, legs and seat adjustments to work the horse.  He is very observant and is a clear communicator.  The whole experience helped me connect with my horse and communicate and control our time together.  Great insights have been handed down through the Carpenter clan!
West S.  San Francisco, CA.

Brandon has great, simple communication skills.  My most important lesson learned was when to quit at round pen work.  I was helped by learning better judgment.
Janice F.  Livingston , MT.

Brandon's biggest strength exhibited during the clinic was patience, patience, and not laughing out loud!!!  I think the reassurance that I was able to do what was asked was a relief. Tammy B.  Moore, MT.

I always learn something every time I take a clinic and this one was positive as well.  It does me a ton of good to watch and listen and I learn so much to help me in my own training.  I learned that subtle changes in what I do in the round pen can make a lot of difference.  Learning to reduce my pressure and back off before I cross the threshold of losing my horse. Jane T.  Clyde Park, MT.

Before Brandon's clinic, I had no confidence...now I have a start.  I have a great little horse...just need to get me trained!  I would take future clinics offered in a heartbeat.
Kim V.  Livingston, MT.

Brandon taught me to always be patient with horses and pay attention to what they are telling us.  He has the ability to convey what the horse is telling us by it's behavior.  I enjoyed the clinic because I felt that Brandon has solid, in depth knowledge and a strong ability to communicate this to others.  I am very happy to be moving forward in the  horse world with his guidance.
Laurie H.  Shell, WY.

During Brandon's clinic, he went into a lot of detail and answered all questions we had.  I gained a lot of confidence in riding and handling horses.  I am not always very comfortable with them, but I felt relaxed the whole time and I learned a lot.
Grace H.  Shell, WY.

Brandon's horsemanship clinic offered me the chance to have my "homework" reviewed and tested.  I observed "holes" in my groundwork as I watched other people ride and handle my horses.  I've gained enough confidence to go forward with my next lesson and perhaps start working with one of my studs.  I recognize my errors and have reinforced the necessity to do a better and more thorough job with my groundwork.  Brandon's biggest strength is his ability to praise not only the horse, but the participant to encourage and promote their eagerness and interest.  I have no reason or desire to seek the assistance of another trainer.  I'm quite happy with the Carpenter's.
Lori A.  Greybull, WY.

While attending the one-day back country pack clinic you put on with your dad, I was impressed with the hands on approach you provided all of us.  Not only did you demonstrate each detailed step in building mantees, what type of equipment to take, how to care for the horses, secure loads to the horses, etc., but you allowed each of us to practice it with one on one instruction.  Your expertise and personal approach to teaching was much appreciated, and I feel much more confident using my horses for packing with mantees and panniers in the back country.  Thanks for the "family secrets" you shared with us to make things a little easier, and also your investment in keeping up a "dying" tradition.
Pete D.  Hamilton, MT.

Your Clinic was a very helpful agent for me.  I took your course before I even bought my first horse so that I would know if this is really what I wanted to be involved with.  Owning a horse is a lot more than just looking at it.  Your clinic taught me so much.  I learned about packing in, handling, rations for both me and my horse if I was to be so brave as to go packing in; and the hands on experience was helpful for me as well.  Needless to say your clinic gave me enough confidence to get my first mare!  I don't think I would have got a horse without the experience of the clinic.  If you were to ask me 10 or even 5 years ago if I would be even thinking of going up to the mountains on horseback and go camping, I would have laughed.  I'm excited to say, with a little more work with my mare, I could do it.  That feels pretty good in knowing that.
Theresa S.  Shepherd, MT.

The training clinic was very enjoyable, and for folks like us who have just acquired pack and riding horses, it's a must.  The hands on approach of saddling, packing, and tying your packs on your horse was the best process for us.  We feel we can now pack into our elk or deer area now without fear of harming our animals.  That in itself was worth the course.  Please advise me of any clinics coming up this year on horse training.
Gary L.  Shepherd, MT.

Training

When I first saw the way Grace responded to Brandon after only 2 minutes in the corral, I could tell she would come back a completely different horse.  I was amazed at how Brandon was able to gain the respect and attention of Grace through his quiet and trusting training techniques.  Grace soon began to mimic these qualities and by the end of her training with Brandon, was the calm accepting horse I had hoped for.  I was not able to spend as much time with Grace after she returned home with me, but even after 3 weeks of not being worked with, she was still accepting and excited to perform everything she had learned.  From the time I dropped Grace off at the Carpenters until I picked her up, I knew she was in the best of hands.  After seeing the way Brandon handles all of his horses it is evident that he takes great pride in making sure that when a horse leaves his possession they are performing at the highest standards.  I really enjoyed learning from Brandon and appreciated his patience and all the extra time he spent keeping me up to date on Grace's progress and answering my questions.  The Carpenters go out of their way to make both the horse and rider as comfortable as possible.  Thanks so much!
Shaundra S.  Fishtail, MT

When I took Grace to Brandon, my hope was that he would provide her a solid foundation, which would allow my daughter to continue her training.  He not only exceeded my expectations but also provided my daughter with a filly that possesses a calm relaxed nature when put in some very awkward situations.  I am very thankful Brandon has put safety as an important part of the horses training lessons.  I look forward to watching Grace develop over the next year.  He has been most helpful in not only training Grace but also helping my daughter learn the proper cues in asking Grace to perform a specific skill.  As a father, I feel very confident that Grace is at a skill level that will now allow my daughter to enjoy riding and training in a reasonably safe environment.  Many thanks to Brandon and his family for taking such great care of Grace while she was in their possession.
Tim S.  Fishtail, MT

I have been riding Daisy and have been trying to come up with the words to describe the job you did with her.  I can't come up with much to adequately describe how well you did.  She is absolutely marvelous.  I've had a lot of colts started over the years and none have come close to the training you did on her.  We get along wonderfully.  I can't praise you enough for the great job you did.  I'm really pleased with the way you developed her walk and everything you did with her in such a short time.  I really got my money's worth!  Thanks so much.
I'd recommend you to anyone.  I am really enjoying her.
Arlene G.  Roundup, MT

Don't ever let anyone tell you that you are too old to ride and to learn new things with your horse.  I'm 55 and have been fortunate to have found Brandon Carpenter.  What he taught my 3 yr. old Tennessee Walker in 30 days, I would not have believed could be done.  We have another 3 year old that went to another trainer the same summer and the difference in the end result of the two is that Brandon's training method was way more complete.  The horse learned and retained a lot more where our appaloosa/arab has a lot more to learn.  I was a little fearful of my horse when I first got on his back (he is tall).  Brandon gave me the extra confidence I needed by instructing me on "trusting my horse."  The knowledge he shared with me has helped me to enjoy learning along with my horse.  I now know what to do in the round pen and for how long.  I know how to make my horse listen to me without force, and I know how to enjoy a ride for the first time without fear.  That is something for me!  I know I have to keep the training going to have a horse that will be my partner for life.  My horse comes to me, and he is what I want when I am riding...prepared for new surprises without going nuts.  I love my horse.  Thanks Brandon for all your help, tips, and the great job you did with Topper.  With much gratitude,
Lindsey H.  Milton Freewater, OR.

I recently went to pick up my 4 year old gelding from Brandon.  I'm truly amazed at what my horse is able to do after 30 days of training.  He's neck reining, side passing, and doing running stops.  He has no hesitation about walking over stumps and other obstacles.  He's loading and unloading easily from a trailer.  Besides my horse's training, Brandon helped me with techniques I could use to be a better partner with my horse.  Being somewhat of a novice rider, I feel confident and comfortable on my horse now.  I believe Brandon has given me back a mature, well-mannered and disciplined horse.
Thank you to the Carpenters for all their experience of training and great care while my horse was with them.  I would recommend Brandon to anyone.
Patty M.  Billings, MT.

I've put quite a lot of thought into what I wanted to say about Brandon and his methods of training both my 2 year old QH, Ruby and myself.  Ruby, whom I got when she was a  yearling, went out to Brandon just after her second birthday.  She's a little willful, a little spoiled, but a very gentle, good natured animal as well.  She and I had a year to get to know each other.  In that year we bonded and I was the "mom."  I had some pretty strict criteria a trainer would need to meet.  I knew that whatever Brandon did with her would color her perceptions of humans for the rest of her life.  The adjectives that describe Brandon's method of training are thorough, consistent, fair and respectful.  The horse is not left to guess what's expected of them.  The rules don't change.  He creates a partnership based on respect, not on force.  He has an open door policy.  I never once worried about her in his care.  The biggest change I noted immediately in Ruby was a sense of calmness and confidence that wasn't there before.  Brandon leaves nothing to chance.  He exposes the horse to all kinds of situations they may encounter out in the real world, from a rope wrapped around their feet, to a tarp over their head.  Brandon also does a good job with the horse's owner as well.  He is respectful but not at all shy about telling you what you're doing right or wrong.  He doesn't mind questions and seems to actually appreciate them.  I now have a two year old with the framework in place to go any direction.  I would highly recommend Brandon to anyone with absolutely no reservations.
Scotta A.  Billings, MT.

Well, I guess this is part two of my series of training with Brandon.  My first visit with Brandon was with Bandit (my APHA gelding).  My second visit to Brandon was with Sage (my 2 year old APHA gelding).  Although Brandon was quick to remind me that I had NOT purchased the fine Tennessee Walkers that he produces, he was willing (thank God) to train Sage.  What I like most about Brandon's training techniques is that you get back a safe, well-trained, and willing horse.  Brandon also takes the EXTRA time to make sure that you and your newly trained steed know how to communicate with one another.  For me, this meant a trail ride, making sure that I had the right cues to give Sage.  Brandon and family, I truly appreciate what you have done for me and my family in training our horses.  There will never be another trainer for us!!

Mark and I acquired a 4 year old Quarter Horse filly (Fli) that was halter broke as a weanling, then turned out for the next three years.  Brandon took her and within a short time had her in the proper mind set.  Fli responds to backing, reining, and side pass which has been astonishing.  The first time I had Fli behind cattle it was with yearlings and 2 year olds.  She did remarkably well.  With Brandon's knowledge of horses and kindness, it makes for a winning combination all around.  We do not say these words lightly.
Our horses are extremely important to us and we believe in kindness and trust.  Brandon trains with both.  We are completely satisfied and highly recommend Brandon.  Because we feel this way, we are more than willing to discuss Brandon's training or results to anyone who may have any questions.  (number available upon request)
Thank you Brandon and Lisa.

I took a 4 yr. old gelding that was yet un-started to Brandon.  I had been going to the annual NILE livestock show in Billings for several years.  It was very obvious that the horses he was riding were very responsive, so I kept watching.  He would ride several horses, all young, all responsive, and all gentle.  His very young children were also riding them.  Then I went to a clinic, he had more horses there, same story, all well trained.  At this clinic, he gave a class on packing into the back country.  I attended the class which was also very good, and very well taught.  Shortly thereafter, I decided to take him this gelding to start.  I start most of my own horses, but was getting behind, and I liked what I had seen in Brandon's horses.  So off to Shepherd I went.  Brandon stayed in contact via email on my gelding's progress.  In just a few weeks he was ready to go.  When I went to pick him up, we loaded my gelding as well as two of his horses and we headed for the hills to go for a ride.  Brandon's young son went with us.  My gelding was very mannerly; he would do things that I'd never think a "30 day" horse would do.  He neck reined, side passed, and was very responsive.  Most amazing was that he would follow behind, or he would lead the group with absolutely no hesitation.  I work with a lot of my own horses, and I found this to be quite a feat for a green horse.  In fact, after Brandon's work with him, I would find it difficult to call this horse green!  But, being a firm believer that it takes a couple years to get a finished horse, I refer to him as that.  My point is that he puts a foundation on a horse that you just don't find very often.  Originally, this horse was to be for sale, well guess what, he is still in my pasture and will be staying there.
This guy comes very highly recommended.  Thank you Brandon!

High Places Ranch selects Brandon Carpenter to start our registered Single-Footing horses because Brandon trains for the real world.  The horses are deliberately exposed to various real world situations.  A horse that is only trained in carefully controlled situations  (arena only) is ill-prepared for trail riding.  I feel confident that the horse is being trained on a regular basis and not just standing in a stall running up boarding fees.  Brandon also has an interest in a variety of training techniques and listens to our requests.

I took my 3 year old Tennessee Walker to Brandon for training.  He started the training immediately loading and unloading my horse in and out of his 2 horse trailer, then round pen work the natural way.
Brandon is kind and gentle in his training methods while gaining the horses respect.                At the end of 30 days, my horse was backing willingly, neck reining and moving out quite happily, which is what I had expected.   What I hadn't expected was that Brandon roped off of him and worked cattle with him.  People were amazed that this was just a 3 year old.  He also packed him in the mountains and used him in 3 different sessions in a packing clinic.  My horse came home with more exposure than I could have ever given him, a great foundation, and he was a fit and happy horse......thanks to Brandon.

Three years ago I had an opportunity to go on a trail ride with Brandon & Lisa Carpenter.  I had always wanted to ride a Walker and jumped at the opportunity to go for the ride.
To say the least, I was impressed with the horses and even more impressed with the training the Carpenters give the horses, and their knowledge of horses.

Shortly after the trail ride, I purchased a Tennessee Walker from Hayhook Tennessee Walkers.  Before I brought the horse home, I was given a training session with the horse and shown exactly how the Carpenters work and train a horse.  It was explained to me what to expect from the horse and what the horse should expect from me.  Brandon made it clear they don't sell their horses to just anybody, they have the horse in mind at all times.
Brandon worked with a second Walker that I purchased from another party.  I asked him to evaluate this horse and finish off any short comings the horse had.  The day I picked the horse up was a full day.  I was put in the corral with my horse and shown the technique used to train the horse.  It was a hands on project.  We then went for a one hour trail ride, and Brandon again worked to assist me with being a better horse handler and understanding what the horse and I needed to do to work together in a positive way.

The Carpenters have both the horse and the rider in mind as they work with you.  They are experienced and dedicated to maximizing their effort with your horse in mind.  The horses they have for sale are first class, well trained and have a very warm, calm disposition.  I would not hesitate to buy another horse from the Carpenters, have a horse trained, or enlist their expertise with evaluating a horse.

I thought I'd drop a line and let you know how my Mustang "Buddy" and I are getting along after your training efforts concluded.  We moved to Wyoming, so I had been off Buddy for about a year with all the work on facilities I had to do.  I have to tell you Brandon, the effort that you put out on Buddy sure paid off!!!  I was a little apprehensive about getting on him at first..... but I soon found out that all we had worked on prior to us parting company was still there when I saddled up and got aboard again.  We headed out like everything was old shoe.
I have worked him on both sheep and cattle.  He really has some sense along those lines...hard to believe that as a mustang he would have the ability to pick up on certain cues and accomplish the task of pushing, or crowding and even cutting off the retreat of an animal.   It is really nice to have a horse (at my age) that I can saddle, hop aboard, and go to work on without having to warm him up to the idea first.  You sure can with Buddy.  Keep up the good work...Your training abilities and knowledge really pays off with a quality animal.

Lessons

I have heard about Brandon Carpenter and his dad, Tex, most of my life.  I had the pleasure of meeting Brandon and his WONDERFUL family the summer of 2000.  I had a 3 yr. old paint gelding that was, of course, the love of my life!!  The problem that Bandit and I had was that HE wanted to be the boss and I am so "green" that I was not sure how to correct him.
Therefore, I made a very overdue call to Mr. Brandon Carpenter that summer.  He suggested that we do "lessons" so he could see how Bandit and I were working together and how he could help.  This was of great relief to me, as well as great concern.  This meeting would tell me whether or not I would be able to keep Bandit, because his behaviors were becoming somewhat dangerous, and correction "way over my head!"  It was with great trepidation that I loaded my little brown horse and drove out to meet this horseman that I had heard about all my life.  OK, here is the scene, and all of you who understand horses will get a kick out of this.....My little precious darling was throwing a fit in the trailer, kicking, snorting and basically telling me he was done with this lesson.  Brandon greeted me and then opened the trailer.  I kid you not, Bandit took one look at this tall, lanky gentleman and lowered his head in defeat.  It was the most amazing response I have ever seen from him before or since.
Brandon worked with Bandit and me on several occasions that summer.  Bandit and I got "homework" to do, because in the Carpenter's training sessions, if you are not willing to put in the effort you are wasting precious time.  Bandit and I worked through our communication problems and literally with Brandon's help have become a better pair.  Bandit is now a coming 5 yr. old and we have had many trials , but the base that Brandon gave us that summer ensured I would be able to work it out.  Thank you so much Brandon!!!
My only advice to prospective students of lessons is that if you think that you will have a "quick fix" and/or that Brandon will "fix" your horse, you are sorely mistaken.  Brandon's goal is to help you build a communication bond, if you will, between you and your horse.  Like he says about his philosophy, he is trying to work himself out of a job.  This can only prove to be the best thing for you and your horse!!!  I look forward to Brandon starting my next colt, Sage.
I know that with Brandon he will get a sound start!  I give Brandon Carpenter my highest recommendations!!! You will not be disappointed!!!

On the first day of the 2002 annual meeting and clinic of the Montana Tennessee Walking Horse Association, I had difficulty controlling one of my horses in the large group situation.  One of my friends suggested that I approach Brandon for some advice in quieting the horse down.  I did not know Brandon.  I simply walked over, introduced myself, and explained my problem and asked for his help.  He immediately made me feel welcome and took the better part of an hour working with me and my horse.  It was magic.  I carefully followed his advice, and by the end of the next day, my horse was a completely different animal in the crowded arena.  I subsequently sought out opportunities to take my horse to other stressful group situations.  Each time I followed Brandon's advice, and each time I got the same result: a calm horse and a happy rider able to enjoy the group event.

My mare was going to foal soon in June of 2002, so I have been on the lookout for a trainer.  I will not be satisfied with just any trainer.  I do not intend to send the colt away and pick it up some 30-45 days later.  Rather, I want to work with someone who will coach me to take a very active role in the colt's education right from the start.  After recently spending several days with Brandon and his wonderful family to evaluate his methods and philosophy, I was certain that I had found the right person to bring out the best in both me and my new foal.  Brandon has a very easy, sensitive manner with both people and horses.  He builds confidence in both horse and rider.  This is such an exciting adventure for me.  I will not waste or jeopardize this opportunity by working with someone second best.  Brandon had already prepared me for welcoming the foal and getting it started.  I look forward to the next few years of learning under Brandon's guidance.

Although I had the opportunity for only two lessons with Brandon, I really got a lot out of the experience.  He was patient, flexible, and good-humored.  He obviously respects and cares for the horses, getting good performance from them while still allowing them to be horses!  Those two lessons were a great value, and I hope I'll have the chance to do more in the future.

Many thanks for the expertise and hospitality you and your family shared with us.  The lessons learned from both horse and people training have served us well in the round pen and the trail.
We have been mindful of your philosophy and unique methods in the planning of our new farm in Fair Hill, MD.
If ever you are out this way, we would love to show you the most beautiful trails outside Montana.

I have a 14 year old quarter horse gelding who could be the very definition of stubborn.
Because of the drought in our region, I decided to trailer my horses to work, where there is a 10 acre pasture.  The night before I intended to take them, I decided to make sure that they would load ok--since it had been a while since they had been anywhere.  I tried for about an hour and a half to get my gelding to load.  He only kept getting worse.  I tried again the next night with the same results.  I had heard about Brandon through the grapevine and contacted him for help.  I was tentative asking for help from someone I was personally unfamiliar with because of the bad trainers out there.  Believe me when I say it was the best move I could have made.  Brandon never lost his patience or even raised his voice with my gelding--although he was given plenty of provocation.  In a short period of time he taught my old dog new manners.  He controlled him without trying to out muscle him.  He now loads without hesitation.  I am grateful for everything.  I would not hesitate to recommend Brandon.

I have a spirited quarter horse that developed a habit of bucking me off occasionally.  I love the horse, but couldn't tolerate such behavior.  I was on the verge of selling him, but took him to Brandon Carpenter as a last resort.  Brandon showed me how to gain the horses respect in a non-violent way and maintain that respect.  I have not had any problems with him since.  As long as I follow Brandon's advice, the horse has been a pleasure to ride, pack, load or anything else.
I was impressed at what a gentleman Brandon is and how he demanded the attention and respect of all the horses under his care.  The horses eyes and ears never left Brandon as long as he was present.  I would give Brandon my highest recommendation to anyone looking for a horse to buy, or needing someone to train a colt or a problem horse.  He undoubtedly has an insight into what goes on in a horses mind.
I would welcome anyone to call me if they want to. (number available upon request).
